Claude's AI Watermark Is Now on Your Website. Here Is What Every SME Needs to Know.

If you have been using Claude to write content for your website, you need to read this.

Anthropic has started watermarking every single word Claude writes, and it is sitting on your website right now.

What Is the AI watermark?

Most people are getting this wrong so here is the plain English version.

It is not a hidden file.

There are no invisible characters in your text.

The watermark is the word choices themselves.

When Claude writes, it selects each word from a range of options.

The watermark nudges those choices into a specific pattern.

Every word looks normal, but across a few hundred words the pattern adds up to a signature that identifies the content as AI generated.

This is why copying and pasting does not remove it.

The words are the watermark.

And this is why changing a few sentences will not fix it either.

The pattern is still there across the rest of the text.

3 things you can do today:

  1. Go to your website and make a list of every page that was written using Claude or any other AI tool

  2. Note which pages are currently ranking well and generating traffic

  3. Screenshot or export your current rankings for every AI written page so you have a baseline to monitor against

SME marketing strategy showing one content idea being repurposed across search, social media, email, blogs and AI platforms.

Should SMEs Be Worried About AI Watermarking?

Honestly, not yet.

Across the sites I am managing, AI written content is not being penalised. Google has had the capability to detect AI generated images for over three years and has never used it as a ranking signal.

But here is the thing. Google has the capability. A detector is coming. And the moment they decide to act on it, every AI written page on your site becomes a liability overnight.

That is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to have a plan.

3 things you can do today:

  1. Set up a weekly ranking check for your most important pages using a free tool like Google Search Console

  2. Create a simple spreadsheet with your top ten pages, their current rankings, and their current traffic

  3. Check it every Monday morning so you spot any movement early before it becomes a serious problem

What NOT to Do

Do not touch pages that are currently working. If a page is ranking well and generating leads, leave it alone. Breaking a high performing page trying to fix a problem that does not yet exist is a far bigger risk than the watermark itself.

Do not use another AI tool to paraphrase it. ChatGPT, Gemini and every other major model are implementing their own watermarking systems. You would just be swapping one watermark for another.

Do not use character swapping tools. These replace letters with lookalikes from other alphabets. Google breaks text into tokens not visual characters. A swapped letter does not resolve to anything and mixed script text is already a spam signal Google flags. You would be damaging your SEO to hide from a consequence that does not currently exist.

3 things you can do today:

  1. Make a list of your top performing pages and put them in a do not touch column

  2. If anyone on your team is suggesting paraphrasing tools or character swapping tools, share this article with them first

  3. Do nothing to any page that is currently working until you see evidence of a ranking drop

What to Do If Your Rankings Start Dropping

Partial editing will not be enough. The watermark is too deeply embedded for section edits to remove it cleanly.

You have two options.

The fast option is a dedicated watermark removal tool. But be careful. These tools change word choices to break the pattern, and in doing so they can change the words that were helping you rank. Always check your keywords are still in the right places afterwards.

The best option is to rewrite the page yourself from scratch. In your own words, your own tone, your own voice.

3 things you can do today:

  1. Keep the same structure and headings when you rewrite, do not throw away what was working

  2. Make sure your keywords appear in exactly the same positions in the new version as they did in the old one

  3. Add something the AI could never have written, a real client result, a specific number, a genuine opinion from your own experience, this is what makes the page resilient regardless of what Google does next

The Bottom Line

The watermark is real. The detector is coming. What Google does with it is still unknown.

But the businesses with real thinking and real expertise behind their content are not going to need to worry about this conversation for long.

Use AI. Just make sure there is enough of you in there that it would not matter either way.

3 things you can do today:

  1. Audit your AI written pages and know exactly what you have on your site

  2. Set up weekly ranking monitoring so you are never caught off guard

  3. Start adding your own genuine thinking, real examples and real results to your most important pages right now, not when Google forces you to
